NATIONAL HOUSING STRATEGY
Today I announced in Cobourg that the Government of Canada made a commitment to engage Canadians on how to improve
housing, and is seeking to strengthen the federal role in helping Canadians meet their housing needs. The National Housing Strategy will ensure that more Canadians have access to housing that meets their needs and that they can afford. This will help to reduce core housing need and lift more Canadians out of poverty, contributing to strong, more inclusive communities.
The Government is committed to working with the provinces and territories to ensure that the unique needs of communities all across Canada can be met. Budget 2017 will provide approximately $3.2 billion over the next 11 years to provinces and territories to support shared priorities for affordable housing. This investment will be provided through a new, expanded, multilateral investment framework that will replace the existing Investment in Affordable Housing, which is set to expire in 2018-19.
The Government will work with provinces and territories to negotiate the new Framework, which will start in 2019-20.
